Jammu, May 21: After a portion of an under-construction tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district collapsed late Thursday night, another body was discovered from the wreckage at a tunnel collapse site in Jammu.
The death toll has risen to four, with six people still missing and a search and rescue operation underway.
After being halted by a new landslide on Friday evening, the mission to rescue nine workers believed to be trapped beneath the debris continued early on Saturday.
The tunnel, which is on the highway near Khooni Nallah in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, caved in at roughly 10.15 p.m. on Thursday, killing one labourer and rescuing three others.
According to the news agency PTI, a small portion of the tunnel’s front wall had fallen.
Nine people were said to be buried beneath the debris.
A rescue attempt was quickly initiated, but it had to be halted on Friday evening due to a new landslide and harsh weather. According to reports, over 15 rescuers narrowly escaped during this moment, including Nayeem-Ul-Haq, the Station House Officer of Ramsu police station.
On the Banihal-Ramban section of the highway, which is the most difficult part of the massive four-laning project, many tunnels are being built.
