Jamshedpur, Feb 28: A sale tax department’s clerk Subodh Kumar Singh was arrested by a team of the Anti-corruption Bureau while accepting a bribe at the Sale Tax office in Bistupur on Tuesday.
Notably, the clerk was arrested when he was receiving Rs 20,000 from a businessman.
According to a senior ACB official, the businessman was trapped in some legal tangle related to sale tax and the clerk had promised him to bail out by taking money.
The official revealed that the clerk had demanded Rs 20,000 for settling the matter in favour of the businessman, but the amount was too big for the latter. Hence he pretended to accept the deal but at the same time contacted the ACB’s divisional office in Sonari where he lodged a complaint against the clerk Subodh Kumar Singh.
The ACB made a preliminary investigation and after finding the complaint prima facie true, it asked the businessman to pay the money as demanded by the clerk.
The ACB functionaries had provided the businessman with phenolphthalein powder for getting it smeared on the currency notes he was such to give to the clerk.
Accordingly, when the cash amounting to Rs 20,000 changed hands at the Sale Tax office today at a scheduled time, the ACB sleuths who were around swooped over the clerk.
