Jamshedpur, Sept 20: Police on Tuesday busted a gang of thieves by arresting eight persons from the Sidhgora and Birsanagar areas of the city, giving much relief to the local residents.
What makes the breakthrough significant is that six of those arrested are minors who used to commit thefts in residential quarters regularly in localities like Sidhgora, Baridih, Telco and Birsanagar.
Two persons, including a middle-aged woman who would buy the stolen goods from the minor thieves’ gang have also been arrested.
Revealing the breakthrough, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mukesh Kumar Lunayat said that the minor gang had committed thefts in as many as nine houses during the past one month period, leaving the residents to remain sleepless.
“Following serial thefts in the eastern part of the city and complaints lodged with the police stations concerned, senior SP, Prabhat Kumar had set up a special team headed by DSP (headquarters-I). After a toilsome work, the team succeeded to detect the gang in the intervening night today, ” said Lunayat while addressing a press conference here this afternoon.
Speaking about the modus operandi of the gang, the SP (Rural) said two of the six gang members would carry out recce during the day so as to determine which of the houses may be a probable target for the theft. The thefts were being executed by the remaining four members in the night.
He said the minor thieves would generally target the houses which were under lock and key and enter the houses from the rear side of a residential quarter.
“Having committed the thefts, the bedding criminals would sell the stolen goods to a woman, Mann Kumari Devi (45) and Dharmendra Kumar Singh (42) residents of Birsanagar and Sidhgora respectively. While the woman would buy the stolen ornaments, the man who has a scrap-iron depot at Vidyapati Nagar in Sidhgora would buy the iron items,” the senior police officer pointed out.
Lunayat said during the raids, the special team unearthed a huge number of ornaments made of gold and silver from the house of the victims.
All those arrested were sent to judicial custody in the late afternoon. While the man and woman accused were sent to Ghaghidih central jail, the remaining six minors were sent to a remand home in Parsudih.
