Ranchi, May 31: The Union Public Service Commission on May 30 released the results of the UPSC CSE Examination 2021 and declared several students of Jharkhand successful.
One such student, Sumit Kumar Thakur, cleared the exams despite the problems that life threw at him and finally in his third attempt, he cleared the exams at 263 AIR.

Sumit, son of Vijay Kumar Thakur (a school van driver) and Neeta Devi (a homemaker), was raised in Jamshedpur and cleared his 10th from Ramakrishna Mission school and 12th from Rajendra Vidyalaya. He then completed his B Tech degree in Computer Science in Engineering from BIT Sindri, Dhanbad in the 2014-18 batch.
He also was ranked third in Jharkhand at the Smart India Hack-a-thon organised by the Central Government in 2017. Despite three offers at the college placement, Thakur chose to prepare for UPSC.
On being contacted, Sumit said, “I always wanted to prepare for UPSC. I think now that it was the right decision. Even though this was my third attempt, I’m glad that I persevered.”
He also runs a start-up with friends regarding software product development. Talking of the work he does there, he said, “We had made a retrospective contact placing app during the pandemic. We have also made apps for the Industry of Steel, Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, and Dhanbad Railway Division.”
Sumit’s parents said, “We are ecstatic and grateful. It is a dream come true, as we have had tough times, but it seems that all of it was worth it.” Talking of his earlier attempts, he said that in his first attempt he had cleared the mains, however, could not clear the interview phase for three marks and this was his third attempt.
Furthermore, he said that during the pandemic, he and his family had to suffer a lot. With the schools closed, and the main earner in the house not earning anymore, Sumit said, he had to start coaching UPSC aspirants at Unacademy, a coaching institute. Claiming that he got the offer only because of him clearing UPSC mains, he added that he gave online classes to the aspirants.
Apart from this, other students from Jharkhand that cleared the JPSC include Ranchi’s resident Shruti Raj Lakshmi who scored 25th rank, Ravi Kumar from Giridih who scored AIR 28, Namrata Chaubey from Gadhwa ranked 73rd and Aayush Venkat that scored the 74th rank.
Notably, the UPSC CSE preliminary exam was held on October 10, 2021, and the results of the examination were released on October 29. The main examination was conducted from January 7 to 16, 2022, and the results were declared on March 17, 2022. The Interview was the last round of the examination which began on April 5 and concluded on May 26.
