Patna: Hours after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to withdraw his support from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), senior Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi responded by reminding Yadav of the Emergency imposed by Congress in 1975. Tyagi urged Yadav to reconsider his alliance with the Congress, which had curtailed democratic freedoms during that period.

“The movement led by Jai Prakash Narayan was against the dictatorship of Congress during the Emergency. Both Mulayam Singh Yadav (Akhilesh’s father) and Nitish Kumar were jailed during this period. Akhilesh should end his partnership with a party that violated democratic norms,” Tyagi said, referencing the actions of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, grandmother of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

Akhilesh Yadav’s comment came during a protest where he criticized the Uttar Pradesh Police for preventing him from visiting Jai Prakash Narayan’s memorial on the icon’s birth anniversary.

The Samajwadi Party and Congress are currently partners in the opposition INDIA bloc, having secured a combined 43 seats in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the BJP saw its tally decrease significantly.

JD(U), which holds 12 crucial Lok Sabha seats, remains a key ally for the BJP as the NDA continues to hold power at the Centre.
