Patna, Aug 25: Devesh Chandra Thakur, the leader of the JD(U), was chosen as the legislative council’s chairman in Bihar on Thursday.
Third-term MLC Devesh Thakur, who had submitted his candidacy papers on Wednesday, was chosen without opposition.
Since the resignation of the previous chairman of the Upper House, Awadhesh Narain Singh, in May 2017, the position has been empty.
Haroon Rashid, the JD(U)’s then deputy chairman, presided over the House until the end of his tenure in 2020, when Singh, a BJP MLC, was appointed acting chairman.
The special session, which was called after the “Mahagathbandhan” came into power in the state, also saw Samrat Chaudhary, a former minister and MLC for the BJP, take the reins as the opposition leader in the Upper House.
