Dumka, DEc. 28: Godda BJP MP Nishikant Dubey saved the lives of 185 bovines including cows and oxen while allegedly being smuggled to Bangladesh. After the rescue he handed over the livestock to the police along with two drovers at Saraiyahat police station of Dumka district early Wednesday morning.
Both of them were identified as Mohiuddin Sheikh and Ali Hussain. They have been booked under section 414 and 34 of the IPC besides section 11 (1) (a) (d), (e) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and section 12 (S) of the Jharkhand Bovine Animal Prohibition Slaughter Act. Later on, livestock were taken to the district veterinary hospital for medical examination.
“There are 167 oxen and 18 cows. All are aged between four to seven years,” sources said.
Nishikant Dubey was on way to Godda from Deoghar along with a few companions when he spotted the herd of bovines being taken by road route near Dighi under Saraiyahat Police Station making him curious enough to get down from his SUV and enquire about the matter from the two drovers.
“Both the drovers namely Mohiuddin Sheikh and Ali Hussain could not produce any document pertaining to their credentials and those of the legal cattle trading they otherwise claimed to have been engaged in” the BJP MP said claiming that the bovines were being smuggled to Bangladesh for slaughtering.
Dubey, whose aides after drove the cattle to the Saraiyahat Police Station, further alleged that cattle smuggling from parts of Santhal Pargana was being patronised by the Hemant Soren government as evident from the fact that smugglers even dare to take them in the open glare for smuggling.
“Thousands of bovines are smuggled to Bangladesh through parts of Santhal Pargana for slaughtering purpose on regular basis in utter defiance of the Jharkhand Bovine Animal Prohibition of slaughter Act to which the state government has turned a blind eye” Dubey said putting question mark on the role of the local police.
Meanwhile, the Police have lodged an FIR against both the drovers belonging to Patra village under Saraiyahat Police Station limit itself and have been forwarded to the jail.
“The drovers failed to produce any document pertaining to the cattle trading and so were forwarded to jail under the prevention of cruelty to animals act and other suitable sections of the IPC,” Vinay Kumar, the officer in-charge (OC) of the Saraiyahat Police Station stated.
