Ranchi, May 2: The Jharkhand High Court today deferred the hearing till June 10 in the matter of compensation to the innocents who were lodged in jail in a false case of murder.
The development took place in the single-judge bench of Justice Sanjay Dwivedi.
Before the hearing was deferred, the court verbally asked the advocate appearing on behalf of the state why the compensation amount should not be deducted from the salary of the erring policemen who implicated an innocent person in a false case.
The court while asking the question asked the state counsel to file an affidavit telling what action has been taken against the erring policemen in the matter before the next hearing.
On February 15, 2014, a girl named Preeti, a resident of Chutia in Ranchi, went missing. The next day, on 16 February 2014, the body of a girl was found near Manjhi Toli Pakki Road in the Bundu police station area. The body was found in a burnt condition. It was revealed in the post-mortem report that after the murder of the girl, the criminals had burnt her. The body was unknown and the police asked Preeti’s relatives to identify her.
Due to the almost identical stature, the family had identified the body as Preeti’s body and the police without getting a DNA match assumed that the body was of Preeti.
In this case, the police registered a case of murder and burning after kidnapping Preeti. Police also arrested three youths of Dhurwa in Ranchi named Ajit Kumar, Amarjeet Kumar and Abhimanyu alias Monu.
The three youths were sent to jail on 17th February 2014.
On 15 May 2014, Ranchi Police had also filed a charge sheet against the three in the case of kidnapping, gang rape and murder and burning. The youths kept denying that they had anything to do with the matter, but the police did not listen to them.
Later, the girl was noticed hale and hearty walking on the city road. As the matter came into the knowledge of the police, the three youths were released from jail.
After the investigation of the CID, the investigator of this case Surendra Kumar, the then Chutia police station in-charge Krishna Murari and the then Bundu police station in-charge Sanjay Kumar were suspended.
It was proved that they arrested the three students without proper investigation and sent them to jail.
After coming out of the jail, the families of the victims had taken refuge in the State Human Rights Commission. In August 2021, after seven years, the three innocent students got a compensation of one lakh rupees each.
Now the matter is before the court for further action into the matter.
