Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has directed that waste management work at the Jhiri garbage dumping site be completed quickly, instructing the Ranchi Municipal Corporation to take prompt action, and has sought a compliance report on the matter by September 17.

Contractor Reports 96% Completion of Waste Processing Work

During the hearing, the contractor informed the court that 96 percent of the waste management work at Jhiri had been completed, with the remaining 4 percent expected to be finished within 15 days.

Court Takes Serious View of Years of Accumulated Waste

The High Court took serious note of the years of accumulated waste and the resulting pollution at the Jhiri dumping yard located in Ratu. The matter was heard as a suo motu public interest litigation by a division bench of Chief Justice M.S. Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar. The Municipal Corporation had earlier informed the court that approximately 8-9 metric tonnes of waste were being processed daily at the site, with the waste disposal work being carried out by Messrs Guru Ramdas Construction.

22 Lakh Tonnes of Waste Accumulated at Site

Ranchi Municipal Corporation dumps the city’s waste at the Jhiri site in Ratu, where continuous dumping over the years has resulted in a mountain of nearly 22 lakh tonnes of garbage, causing significant pollution in the surrounding environment and posing serious health risks to nearby residents.

Only 3.5 Lakh Tonnes Processed in a Year Despite Two-Year Target

The Municipal Corporation had entered into an agreement with the agency on January 31, 2024, setting a target to clear the waste mountain within two years. However, only 3.5 lakh tonnes of waste have been processed in the first year, even as fresh waste continues to be dumped daily, worsening the situation for local residents, who have been demanding that the dumping yard be relocated away from populated areas.
