Ranchi, April 3: Internet service in Sahibganj district shall remain suspended for 24 hours.

The district administration today directed for the same as a precautionary measure against spread of communal tension in the district erupted with damage of the idol of Lord Hanuman under a Bunyan tree in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav confirmed the suspension saying ‘suspension of internet service will reduce spread of any message disturbing the communal harmony of the district.’ ‘It is a precautionary measure,” DC Yadav said.

Asked about the present situation, DC Yadav said: “The situation is under control. The idol was hardly one and half feet high and we have re-established the same. We have also pacified the agitating mob and everything is peaceful now.”

Sahibganj was tense after anti-social elements pelted stones at the Chaiti Durga idol immersion procession two days ago. As an attempt was being made to bring normalcy, an incident of damaging the idol of Lord Hanuman took place. The idol was under a tree in between Patel Chowk and Old Sadar Hospital Chowk in the district.

After damaging the statue, anti-social elements also threw away the flags. As soon as people came to know about this, a crowd gathered there. People sat on the streets and are demanding the police-administration to arrest those involved in this incident. They blocked NH 80. In view of the tension, many private schools remained closed.
