Chatra, March 23: A team led by Chatra subdivisional police officer Avinash Kumar cracked the case related to sale of an infant by his mother Asha Devi. Total eleven arrests have been made in this case so far, including three from Bokaro. Asha Devi gave birth to the baby on Saturday and reached her home on Tuesday in Dibha mohalla of town empty hand after which relatives raised an alarm.
Kumar confirmed recovery of the infant from Bokaro confirming that eleven persons, including Asha and sahiya Dimpal were arrested. The couple, Reena Devi and Upendra Kumar, from Bokaro who purchased the baby in Rs.4.5lakh was also arrested. Kumar said they have recovered Rs 1.64 lakh so far out of Rs. 4.5 lakh.
According to Kumar, Chatra Deputy Commissioner Abu Imran got the information about this case and he talked to Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan. Seeing the sensitivity of this case, Ranjan formed a team led by Kumar which rounded up Asha Devi who admitted selling her newly born son in Rs.1lakh. She named sahiya Dimpal Kumari after which the police took her also in their custody. Interrogation revealed that she handed over the baby to a couple in Petarwar of Bokaro in Rs.4.5 lakh with Asha given only Rs.1lakh.
On complaint of hospital superintendent Manish Lal, an FIR was lodged against eleven under section 370/34 of the IPC and under 81/87 Juvenile Justice act. Kumar said the couple was arrested from Bokaro but they are natives of Barkagaon in Hazaribag. The rest arrested persons are either from Bokaro and Chatra, added he.
Sources said sahiya Dimpal took Asha in her confidence and offered Rs.1lakh for her newly born baby and she agreed on her proposal. This was the reason why she walked out of the hospital without getting discharged and handed over her baby to the couple. Police officials said they have recovered Rs.1.64 lakh out of Rs.4.5 lakh and so efforts are on to nab two missing middlemen who escaped with rest of the amount.
Deputy Commissioner Abu Imran congratulated the Chatra police for recovering the baby within 24 hours of the incident. “I got information through Whatsapp and so alerted the police and soon the success came,” added he.
According to him, the woman who sold her son was getting all benefits under government schemes and it seems that she handed her baby to the couple as she was already having a son and two daughters. He said purchase of baby in such a way is illegal and for adoption there is a legal process.
The team which tasted this success comprises sadar police station officer-in-charge Manohar Karmali, ASIs Beena Kumari and Niranjan Kumar besides the members of technical cell.
