Ranchi, March 17: Jharkhand’s Salima Tete, Sangeeta Kumari and Beauty Dungdung have been selected in the 20-member Indian Junior Women’s Hockey team for the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup which will be held from April 1 to 12 at Potchefstroom, South Africa. Salima has also been named as the captain of the team.
Manoj Konbegi, Vice President of Hockey Jharkhand spoke to Lagatar24.com and said that all the three players deserve to be in the team and have performed consistently in the recent past.
“All the three girls from Jharkhand are extremely talented and have been in excellent form in the recent past. Sangeeta scored a goal in her first game against Spain and Salima has also been quite amazing in the recently held Olympics,” he said.
Salima Tete is a resident of Badki Chhapar village, Simdega whereas Beauty Dungdung and Sangeeta Kumari are residents of Karagagudi. They are currently practicing in the ongoing camp in Bhubaneswar.
The Indian team is in Group D alongside Malaysia, Germany and Wales. India’s first match will be against Wales on April 2 followed by Germany on April 3 and Malaysia on April 5.
Bhola Nath Singh, President of Hockey Jharkhand said that this is a big achievement for Jharkhand Hockey as it will inspire more players and hope that they do well.
Salima and Sangeeta scored goals against Spain in the FIH Pro League. Even against East Germany, both players performed well that led to the team’s win. Beauty Dungdung was the top scorer of the junior Indian women’s team in Chile last year.
Expressing his happiness, Secretary Vijay Shankar Singh said that the selection of the three players is a Holi gift for Hockey Jharkhand.
