Ranchi: Jharkhand is witnessing an intense cold spell, with temperatures plunging lower than major north Indian cities like Delhi and hill stations such as Shimla. Gumla recorded a chilling minimum of 2.8°C, while Ranchi’s temperature dropped to 7°C, marking one of the coldest phases of the season.
Cold Wave Breaks Regional Records
On December 26, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 21°C and a minimum of 9°C, while Shimla saw temperatures ranging between 13°C and 6°C. In contrast, several parts of Jharkhand experienced much colder conditions, with Gumla emerging as the coldest at 2.8°C. Ranchi also saw a sharp dip, with the mercury falling to 7°C, underscoring the severity of the cold wave across the state.
Further Dip Expected Over Next Two Days
The weather department has forecast a further drop of around two degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures over the next two days. Districts such as Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, and Latehar are likely to experience cold wave conditions. In and around Ranchi, maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 21°C and 24°C over the coming days, while minimum temperatures may range from 7°C to 10°C by December 30.

Across Jharkhand, Ranchi recorded a maximum of 21.4°C and a minimum of 7.0°C, Jamshedpur 24°C and 10°C, Daltonganj 23.2°C and 5.6°C, Bokaro 21.6°C and 7.5°C, Chaibasa 26.8°C and 9.2°C, Khunti 24.3°C and 5.2°C, Lohardaga 21.3°C and 5.2°C, Latehar 17.4°C and 7.6°C, Seraikela 26.2°C and 8.6°C, and Gumla 21.7°C and a stark 2.8°C.
Comparison With Major Indian Cities
While Jharkhand continues to shiver, cities like Mumbai and Chennai remain relatively warm, recording minimum temperatures of 21°C and 22°C respectively. Kolkata stood at 13°C, Lucknow and Jaipur at 9°C, and Patna at 12°C. Shimla recorded 6°C, while Manali dipped to a freezing -8°C, highlighting the contrast in winter intensity across regions.
