New Delhi, May 5: The Jammu and Kashmir delimitation panel signed the final order for the union territory’s delimitation on Thursday. The commission entrusted with redrawing the borders of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir completed its work Wednesday, clearing the way for the Valley’s much-anticipated assembly elections.
Once the report is presented to the government, the delimitation ‘award’ will be made public, detailing the number of constituencies and their sizes, via a gazette notification. The decision is critical because the projected elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been without an elected government since June 2018, will only take place after the delimitation exercise is completed.
After the elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to restore the region’s statehood.
Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai chairs the panel, which also includes chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra and deputy election commissioner Chander Bhushan Kumar, state election commissioner KK Sharma, and chief electoral officer Hridesh Kumar as ex-officio members.
