Washington, D.C.: U.S. President Joe Biden has spent a substantial portion of his presidency on vacation, according to a recent analysis by the Republican National Committee (RNC). The 81-year-old president has reportedly taken 532 vacation days in less than four years, which amounts to approximately 40% of his time in office.
This staggering figure means President Biden has accumulated more vacation days in a shorter period than the average American worker would in nearly five decades. With the average American receiving about 11 vacation days per year, Biden’s time off equates to nearly 48 years’ worth of vacation for a regular worker.
Critics have voiced concerns about the President’s extensive vacation time, particularly during a period marked by global instability and domestic challenges. Mark Paoletta, former general counsel of the White House budget office under President Donald Trump, stated, “The image of Biden fast asleep and lying flat on his back in his chair at the beach while America and the world are on fire will define the Biden presidency,” as reported by the New York Post.
Key issues such as inflation, border security, and ongoing international conflicts have been cited by critics who argue that the President should be spending more time addressing these pressing concerns. Some have drawn attention to the optics of taking time off during such critical moments.
However, Biden’s aides have defended his vacation schedule, noting that, like previous presidents, he remains on call and works remotely during his time off. Despite this, concerns about the frequency and duration of his vacations have persisted, with Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) humorously suggesting that Biden might need even more vacation time.
A comparison of Biden’s time off with previous presidents reveals that his 40% out-of-office ratio surpasses his predecessors. Former President Donald Trump spent about 26% of his term on personal trips, while Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama vacationed for just 11% of their presidencies. Jimmy Carter, who served only one term, took a total of 79 vacation days during his presidency.
As Biden faces growing scrutiny for his time away from the White House, the debate over the balance between leadership responsibilities and personal breaks continues to spark discussions.
