New Delhi, May 19: Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior attorney Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan were sworn in as Supreme Court judges on Friday by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

During a swearing-in ceremony held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India Chandrachud administered the oath of office to the new justices.

The Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength of 34 judges was attained with the swearing-in of Justices Mishra and Viswanathan.

The Supreme Court will, however, only be fully staffed for a short time because Friday is also the last day of work for three judges who will retire in June.

The summer recess, which runs from May 22 to July 2, is when Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and V Ramasubramanian will retire from their positions.

After Justice JB Pardiwala retires on August 11, 2030, Justice Viswanathan will take over as Chief Justice of India and hold the position until May 25, 2031.

On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu issued the warrant designating Justice Mishra and Justice Viswanathan as judges for the Supreme Court. Arjun Ram Meghwal, the new law minister, tweeted about their appointments.
