New Delhi, Aug 27: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to the new CJI.
Justice Lalit’s predecessor, Justice NV Ramana, was also present at the oath-taking ceremony along with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other union ministers.
UU Lalit, the new Chief Justice of India, will hold office for only approximately two and a half months (74 days) before retiring, but within that time, the Supreme Court will be given some of the most significant cases that ask important constitutional problems.
There is a large list of such ongoing cases, some of which have been carried over into the terms of multiple CJIs, not only his immediate predecessor NV Ramana. They range from the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, to religion as criterion for citizenship, to reservation on economic basis, to the secret electoral bonds that fund political parties.
