Chennai: Celebrated actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is poised to make his parliamentary debut, with the DMK allocating one Rajya Sabha seat to his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM). This move comes as part of a political understanding between the DMK and MNM, stemming from their alliance in the 2024 general election.
DMK Announces Candidates, Reserves One Seat for MNM
The DMK, led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, announced its Rajya Sabha nominees on Tuesday. Incumbent MP P Wilson has been renominated for a second term, while R Sivalingam and Rokiah Malik have been named as the other official candidates. Out of the seats available under the DMK’s quota, one has been reserved for the MNM — a gesture seen as recognition of Kamal Haasan’s support during last year’s Lok Sabha elections.
Although the official MNM nominee has not yet been named, political circles strongly suggest that Kamal Haasan himself may take up the seat, marking his formal entry into Parliament.
Strengthening Opposition Unity
This development is being viewed as a strategic boost for opposition unity in Tamil Nadu, with the DMK continuing to solidify its alliances ahead of future elections. Kamal Haasan’s entry into the Rajya Sabha is expected to add heft to the opposition’s national presence, especially given his strong oratory and reform-centric agenda.
Kamal Haasan founded MNM in 2018 with a platform focused on transparency, anti-corruption, and development. While the party has not yet achieved major electoral success, Haasan’s influence remains significant, particularly in urban Tamil Nadu.
