Kanpur, June 7: At least another 12 persons have been arrested in connection with the violence that erupted in Kanpur on June 3, bringing the total number of those detained to 50.
A 16-year-old suspect also surrendered at the Colonelgunj police station after his picture appeared on police posters posted throughout the town.
Two more cases were filled for publishing inflammatory content on Facebook and Twitter have been filed, bringing the total number of people arrested to 23.
The Uttar Pradesh Police distributed posters with images of 40 people accused of instigating the violence in Kanpur last week, which injured at least 40 people, including 20 police officers. Several footage of the incident, including those taken on CCTV, have yielded photographs of the alleged accused.
During the rallies against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019, a similar approach was made.
Notably, violence erupted in Kanpur’s Pared, Nai Sadak, and Yateemkhana neighbourhoods when certain members of the minority population called for shop closures in protest of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s allegedly derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammed.
The violence quickly spread to other areas, including Beconganj, Anwarganj, and Moolgunj. Stones were thrown, bullets were fired, and petrol bombs were thrown at police, who used batons to disperse the crowd.
After their claimed provocative remarks against the Prophet sparked enormous protests and criticism, the BJP suspended its spokeswoman Nupur Sharma and removed its Delhi media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal on Sunday (even globally).
