New Delhi, Oct 25: Basavalinga Swami, a 45-year-old Lingayat seer who oversaw Kanchugal Bande Mutt in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district, was discovered hanging from a window grille on Monday, according to the police.
As he left a two-page suicide note about being tormented by “certain people who wished to remove him from his position,” his final few calls are now being tracked to look into a blackmail angle, according to police.
For 25 years, Basavalinga Swami served as the mutt’s principal seer. The police reported that an investigation is ongoing into a case of aiding suicide.
Recently, the seer who was appointed mutt chief in 1997 celebrated his silver jubilee.
As the seer usually woke up around 4 am and kept the doors open, sources told PTI that the employees became concerned when the puja room door remained shut until 6 am. Staff investigated behind him when he didn’t answer knocks or phone calls and discovered that he was hanging. The cops were notified.
He claimed that some people were blackmailing him by assassinating his reputation in the suicide note, and he even named them, according to the police. At this point, police have declined to provide details.
After the proper protocol and post-mortem were completed, the seer’s final rites were conducted on Monday evening, and he was buried at the mutt. The leader of Chilume Mutt, Basavalinga Swamy, was discovered hanged in a similar manner in December of the previous year. He was alleged to have passed away unhappy about his failing health.
