Thiruvananthapuram, August 8: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday moved a resolution in the state assembly against the BJP-led central government’s plan to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country and the Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the resolution.
The Congress-led opposition UDF, which supported the Left government’s proposal, suggested a number of amendments and modifications to the resolution after the Chief Minister moved it.
The Chief Minister described the Cente’s decision to impose UCC as “unilateral and hasty” and stated that the Kerala Legislative Assembly was concerned and dismayed by it.
The CPI(M)-led government’s decision was made in the midst of a campaign against the UCC underway by the ruling Left, the opposition UDF, as well as numerous religious organizations in the state.
Both fronts had organised seminars separately in Kozhikode recently against the UCC, in which the representatives of various religious outfits took part.
Public submissions addressing ideas for adopting the UCC throughout the nation were received by the Law Commission of India last month.
