New Delhi, Feb 18: Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has agreed to Arvind Kejriwal’s recommendation to hold the Delhi mayor elections on February 22.
According to the Lieutenant Governor’s directive, the mayor, deputy mayor, and six standing committee members will be chosen on Wednesday.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, had sent a letter to the lieutenant governor earlier in the day asking for the election to be held on February 22.
The change occurs a day after the Supreme Court mandated that a notice convening the municipal corporation’s first meeting to set the date of the mayoral election be issued within 24 hours.
Shelly Oberoi, an AAP candidate for mayor, filed a petition asking for an early election.
The Municipal House must convene and elect the mayor within one month of the conclusion of the civic elections, as required by the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act. Even though the civic voting ended on December 4, the elections for mayor in the national capital have been postponed three times.
The MCD house had to be postponed on January 6 after heated arguments between BJP and AAP members during their first meeting after the civic elections.
