New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at enhancing governance and fostering development in Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory. The newly designated districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
Home Minister Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to bringing opportunities closer to the people of Ladakh, stating, “The Modi government is dedicated to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh. The establishment of these new districts will ensure that governance reaches every corner of the region, delivering benefits directly to the citizens.”
Ladakh, which was granted Union Territory status following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, has been under the direct administrative control of the Union Home Ministry. The region was previously part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, before being bifurcated into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded the creation of the new districts, expressing his support on X (formerly Twitter). “The creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the people there,” he wrote.
Until now, Ladakh consisted of only two districts, Leh and Kargil, each managed by its autonomous district council. With the addition of these five new districts, the total number of districts in Ladakh will rise to seven, marking a significant step towards localized governance and development.
