Other than Chotu, all the suspects, according to Lakhimpur Kheri’s Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Suman, are from the village of Lalpur. SP Sanjeev Suman asserted that the girls went with the accused of their own free will, in contrast to the victims’ family’s assertion that they were kidnapped.

The two girls had met the accused through Chotu, a neighbour of the girls. He was also detained.

According to the SP, all of the accused have been lodged under IPC Sections 302, 376, and the POCSO Act.The SP added that the victims’ post-mortems will be performed by a group of three doctors, and that the procedure would be videotaped.

“The girls were taken to a sugarcane field and raped by Suhail and Junaid. When the girls insisted on marriage, the men strangled them with their dupatta. Then Karimuddin and Arif came to the spot and helped in the cover-up. They hung the bodies from the tree to make it look like suicide,” district police chief Sanjeev Suman told reporters.
