Ranchi, March 23: The former Bihar MP and fodder scam convict Dr. Rabindra Kumar Rana passed away in Delhi during treatment at AIIMS on Wednesday. Owing to his serious condition, the RIMS referred to AIIMS for better treatment. He was undergoing treatment at the New Trauma Centre at RIMS under judicial custody. Late on Tuesday night, RK Rana was airlifted by air ambulance to Delhi AIIMS.
The doctors at RIMS said that he had caught the infection in his liver and his stomach was getting filled with water leading to a condition of multi-organ failure. At RIMS he was undergoing treatment under the supervision of Dr. PK Bhattacharya who is the in-charge of RIMS Critical Care. He was kept on a ventilator owing to a poor saturation level of oxygen.
A former RJD MP and state minister RK Rana was a powerful politician of his time considered as a close associate of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. A senior CBI official said that Rana was convicted in six fodder scam cases namely RC 20A/ 96 (scam amount Rs 37.7 Crore, Chaibasa treasury, Jail 5 years), RC 22A/ 96 (scam amount Rs 28.26 Lakh, Godda treasury, Jail 5 years), RC 33A/ 96 (scam amount Rs 45 Lakh, Godda treasury, Jail 5 years), RC 68A/ 96 (scam amount Rs 37.62 Crore, Chaibasa treasury, Jail 5 years), RC 64A/96 (scam amount Rs 89 Lakh, Deoghar treasury, Jail 3.5 years) and RC 47A/96 case. His last conviction was made in RC 47A/96 which is related to the illegal withdrawal of Rs 139.35 Crore from Doranda treasury in Ranchi during 1994-95. On February 21, the court awarded him five years of jail term and Rs 60 Lakh fine.
He was acquitted in only one case that is RC 38A/96 related to illegal withdrawal from Dumka treasury. The CBI had challenged his acquittal. In RC 33A/96 case the CBI had filed a petition for enhancement of his punishment.
Rana was also facing a disproportionate asset case RC 79A/96 where the trial is going at Patna CBI court. The CBI charged him for amassing a disproportionate asset worth Rs 7.89 crore.
