Washington: Outgoing US President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 distinguished individuals, including Hillary Clinton, Lionel Messi, Michael J. Fox, and George Soros, in a ceremony held at the White House on Saturday. This prestigious honor recognizes exceptional contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, as well as global peace and significant societal impact.
Honoring Excellence Across Fields
The recipients represented diverse domains, from politics and entertainment to sports and philanthropy. President Biden praised their contributions, saying, “This group of extraordinary individuals has left an indelible mark on our nation and the world.”
Hillary Clinton received a standing ovation as she was recognized for her decades of public service, including her work as Secretary of State, First Lady, and the first woman to be nominated for US President by a major political party.
Lionel Messi, celebrated for his contributions to global sports, could not attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts. Michael J. Fox was honored for his advocacy and groundbreaking work in Parkinson’s disease research.
Other recipients included Jane Goodall, conservationist; Denzel Washington, actor; Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue; and Bono, the lead singer of U2.
Recognizing Posthumous Contributions
Posthumous honors were awarded to figures such as Fannie Lou Hamer, a leader in the fight for racial justice, and Robert F. Kennedy, remembered for his dedication to civil rights and public service.
Controversy Surrounding George Soros’ Award
George Soros, recognized for his philanthropic work through the Open Society Foundations, faced criticism from Republican leaders. They accused Soros of supporting policies and individuals they believe undermine societal order. Despite the backlash, the White House defended the choice, citing Soros’ lifelong commitment to democracy and human rights.
A Celebration of American Values
Biden emphasized the significance of the awardees’ contributions, stating, “You inspire, lead, and remind us of what is possible as a nation. Your efforts bring healing and joy, and we are forever grateful.”
The ceremony, attended by notable figures, including former President Bill Clinton, celebrated the spirit of innovation, resilience, and humanity exemplified by the honorees.
