Ranchi, Jan 17: The Lions Clubs International (LCI) continues to work on the world’s largest month-long e-waste collection drive across India that began on January 13. The club initially began the campaign this because of its commitment to provide a forum for open discussions and promoting the principles of good governance and good citizenship.

Officials have claimed that the club encourages people of service to serve their community. Taking this belief forward, the club has begun a E-Waste Collection programme. The campaign began on January 13 to mark the birth anniversary of its founder Melvin Jones.

Notably, e-waste makes up 70 percent of the world’s total toxic waste. 82 percent of e-waste in India comes from devices which can cause cancer. E-waste, when not disposed off properly poisons rivers and lakes along with contaminating soil with highly toxic chemicals.

Through this campaign, the LCI hopes to strengthen awareness on the harmful effects of e-waste. Along with this, the LCI hopes to be able to sensitize the community about the importance of effective management.

Lions District 322A has initially started with more than fourteen collection centers in collaboration with more than 80 Lions Clubs in cities including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro Steel City, Chaibasa, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Daltonganj, Gumla, Garhwa.

The Lions Fraternity of Ranchi began its campaign under the aegis of Lions Club of Ranchi Capital on January 13 at Lions Ranchi East Pyau, Near Albert Ekka Chowk. Here, Chief Guest Deputy Mayor of Ranchi Municipal Corporation Sanjeev Vijayvargiya, IPDG Siddharth Mazumdar, First Deputy District Magistrate Lion Kamal Jain, GST Coordinator Lion Rajeev Lochan, GMT Madhav Lakhotia, PDG Sushma Trivedi and other dignitaries inaugurated the programme. District Coordinator (e-WASTE) Deepak Lohia and Dharmendra Sinha of District 322A were present on the occasion as well.
