New Delhi, Aug 25: In a first-ever historic event, the Supreme Court’s ruling on political freebies will be livestreamed today in honour of departing Chief Justice NV Ramana.

For the first time, Supreme Court hearings and decisions in about 20 cases will be webcast.

According to a Supreme Court announcement, today starting at 10:30 am, the Ceremonial Bench, the court of the Chief Justice, would be broadcast live online through the NIC (National Informatics Centre) webcast portal.

The most important decision will concern a petition calling for the deregistration of political parties that give away items prior to elections.

For the first time in the Supreme Court, the proceedings of the ceremonial bench in the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana's court will be live streamed.

Many political parties have contended that they are public welfare policies rather than freebies.

The petition asks the Supreme Court to revisit its decision from a case that was identical to this one in 2013, so the court will decide whether to refer the case to a new bench.

The Centre’s failure to convene an all-party meeting to tackle the “serious issue” of political party handouts was questioned by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

According to the Supreme Court, nothing could be done unless all political parties agree that freebies will ruin the economy and must be prevented.
