New Delhi, Oct 26: Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader, has assumed the role of Congress President, becoming the first non-Gandhi to hold the post in 24 years.
Sonia Gandhi presented the election certificate to Kharge (80) on Wednesday at the AICC headquarters.
Earlier in the day, Mallikarjun Kharge honoured Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Kharge congratulated all delegates who supported him in the party elections during his first speech as the leader of the Congress.
Sonia Gandhi received praise from the new party leader for leading the Congress through difficult times. Kharge credited her with the formation of two UPA governments and mentioned MGNREGA, the Food Security Act, and the Right to Information Act.
Sonia Gandhi congratulated new president and said, “I extend my heartiest congratulations to the newly elected president Mallikarjun Kharge. Change is the rule of the world… Congress had faced a lot of difficulties earlier as well. But I’m sure we will overcome the problems.”
