Islamabad, Oct 26: Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, stated on Tuesday that he would begin his long march on October 28 in an effort to persuade the government to dissolve the National Assembly and call early elections.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Imran Khan (70) last week for failing to inform it about the money he obtained from selling the state gifts, popularly known as the Toshakhana case.
When the Islamabad High Court heard the former prime minister’s disqualification petition from the nation’s top election commission on Monday, it made the observation that Khan was not prohibited from running in future elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Lahore, the city from which he chose to launch the march toward the capital Islamabad, Khan announced that he will personally lead the demonstration beginning on October 28 at the Liberty Chowk.
“We are not going to Islamabad for any violence; we will not break any law; we will not enter the (high security) Red Zone; and we will hold protest in the capital at a place which has been designated by the Supreme Court,” he said.
Notably, Khan was removed from office by a vote of no confidence in April of this year, and since then, he has been staging protests to persuade the government to call new elections, which he is convinced would win.
