New Delhi, Sept 2: A man was detained in Argentina on Thursday after he allegedly pointed a gun at vice president Cristina Kirchner, according to security minister Anibal Fernandez.
As the vice president got out of the car taking her home in Buenos Aires, images on several television stations showed the man levelling a gun at her head from close range.
Fernandez said the forensic police personnel would now analyze fingerprints to obtain more information.
Hundreds of activists have gathered since last week in front of the home of Kirchner, who is accused of fraudulently awarding public works contracts in her stronghold in Patagonia.
Prosecutors have asked that the ex-president, who ruled from 2007 to 2015, face 12 years in jail and a lifetime ban from politics. Kirchner has legislative immunity and serves as president of the Senate.
Even if found guilty the decision is anticipated towards the end of the year, she would not serve time in prison unless the nation’s Supreme Court upheld her sentence or she lost her Senate seat in the upcoming elections at the end of 2023.
