Ranchi, July 19: After a long time, Maoists marked their presence at Netarhat, a tourist destination, in Latehar district.

It was realized after they shot a villager dead in Dauna village on Wednesday night while assaulting other three in the same village.

The deceased has been identified as Dev Kumar Prajapati.

The purpose behind the killing has not been ascertained so far. According to a police official, Naxalites had come to the village two days ago and were searching for some villagers.

“When Naxalites failed to meet the villagers that time, they returned again last night and marked their presence by killing a villager and assaulting them,” the police official said.

Latehar SP Anjani Anajan and state police spokesperson and IG (operation) A.V.Homkar could not be contacted for their comments on the incident.

A locality resident said villagers panicked after the incident.
