Sialkot, Oct 11: Unidentified assailants shot and killed Shahid Latif, the brains behind the Pathankot attack and one of India’s most wanted terrorists, on Wednesday in Sialkot, Pakistan.
Shahid Latif, 41, was a key conspirator in the plot behind the January 2, 2016, attack on Pathankot. He belonged to the banned terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
He had organized the assault from Sialkot and dispatched four JeM terrorists to Pathankot to carry it out.
In November 1994, Latif was apprehended in India on terrorism-related charges, invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He underwent a trial, was convicted, and subsequently incarcerated. Following his prison term in India, he was sent to Pakistan through the Wagah border in 2010.
Latif was additionally accused of the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation revealed that after his release in 2010, Latif returned to the Jihadi network in Pakistan. The Indian government had designated him as a wanted terrorist.
