Guwahati: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani has launched sharp criticism against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the state’s eviction drives, alleging that people are being divided on religious grounds for political gain.
Allegations of Targeted Language
Madani said that derogatory and exclusionary terms such as “Miya,” “unknown,” and “suspect” are being used for a particular community, which he described as deeply insulting. He added that the use of such language was even more painful than the harsh manner in which the evictions were being carried out.
Call for Fair Process
Madani stressed that if there are suspicions about anyone’s nationality, the government should resolve them through lawful verification. “If someone is a foreigner, send them back. We are not opposing that. We cannot tolerate foreigners living here illegally. But why humiliate Indian citizens in this way?” he questioned.
Delegation’s Ground Visit
Maulana Madani, along with a high-level delegation of Jamiat leaders, reached Assam on September 1. The team has visited several relief camps housing families displaced by bulldozer actions. So far, the delegation has traveled nearly 300 kilometers, meeting affected families and surveying impacted areas.
