Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has cancelled her election campaign in solidarity with the people of Lebanon after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in Israeli airstrikes on Friday in Beirut. Nasrallah, along with his daughter Zainab, was targeted and killed by Israeli forces in a series of strikes aimed at Hezbollah strongholds.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mehbooba Mufti said, “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief and exemplary resistance.”
The death of Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, and his close associates has stirred protests in Jammu and Kashmir, where demonstrators took to the streets in Budgam and Srinagar, holding images of Nasrallah to express their outrage. Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for the attack, stating, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world.”
The killing of Nasrallah has been described as a “significant blow” to Hezbollah by Israeli officials, with further reports indicating that other Hezbollah operatives, including Ali Karaki, Muhammad Ali Ismail, and Hossein Ahmed Ismail, were also killed.
Maulana Yasoob Abbas, the General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), paid tribute to Nasrallah and called his death “a great loss for the Muslim world.” He has called upon India’s Shia community to observe three days of mourning, raising black flags in homes as a mark of respect. Abbas also urged the United Nations to intervene to halt the escalating violence in Palestine and Lebanon.
