In a significant move against fake profiles and spam content, Meta—the parent company of Facebook—has announced that it permanently deleted over 10 million fake accounts during the first half of 2025. Additionally, 5 lakh other accounts have been blocked for engaging in suspicious activities.
Fake Profiles Exploiting Audience Reach
According to Meta, many of the removed accounts were duplicate profiles aiming to exploit Facebook’s algorithm and audience reach. Numerous accounts were mimicking popular content creators to gain traction by leveraging their identities. The primary goal of these fake accounts was to spread spammy and misleading content, deceiving users and artificially boosting engagement metrics.
Action Against Spam and Bots
An investigation into the blocked 5 lakh accounts revealed involvement in activities such as comment spamming and artificially inflating likes and shares using bots. Many users repeatedly posted old content to manipulate views and reach on the platform. Meta stated that its mission is to make Facebook a genuine, trustworthy, and clean platform where users can access only authentic and quality content.
Cleaning Up the Surge of AI-Generated Content
With AI making content creation easier than ever, duplicate and recycled posts have surged across social media. Meta’s latest action aims to curb this trend, ensuring users are exposed to more relevant, authentic, and original content.
Boosting Original Creators
The company is now taking steps to support original content creators. Meta announced that creators producing unique photos and videos will receive greater reach and rewards. Conversely, duplicate or AI-generated recycled content will face reduced visibility on the platform.
Meta’s Big AI Ambitions
This crackdown comes as Meta gears up for significant developments in AI. Under CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership, the company is working on developing a state-of-the-art AI supercluster, poised to elevate Meta’s technological capabilities in the coming years.
