New Delhi, Jan 1: Facebook owner Meta Inc is getting ready to decide whether or not it will permit former US President Donald Trump to rejoin Facebook and Instagram, according to the Financial Times on Sunday.
The market leader in social media earlier declared that it would decide by January 7 whether to permit the former president to return. However, that choice is now anticipated to be made public later this month, the newspaper reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.
People familiar with Meta’s operations told the publication that the company has formed a working group to focus on the issue, and that members of the group come from the content policy team, as well as the public policy and communications departments.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by Meta.
The change comes after Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner, lifted a long-standing ban on Trump in November of last year after user polling. Trump insisted that he had no desire to use Twitter again.
Trump launched a quest to win the presidency again in 2024 in November, hoping to fend off potential Republican challengers. Since his defeat in the 2020 election, Trump has mounted constant attacks on the legitimacy of the American electoral process.
