New Delhi, Dec.27: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced that metros and major cities such as Gurugram, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Pune will be the first to receive 5G services next year.

In March-April 2022, the government expects to organise spectrum auctions for 5G. DoT has asked the telecom sector regulator TRAI for advices on the reserve price, band plan, block size, and quantity of spectrum to be auctioned in September of this year. TRAI, for its part, has begun talks with industry stakeholders on the matter.

“With regard to rollout of 5G services, Telecom Service Providers (TSPs)- M/s Bharti Airtel, M/s Reliance Jio and M/s Vodafone Idea- have established 5G trials sites in Gurugram, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jamnagar, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, Gandhi Nagar cities. These Metros and big cities would be the first places for launch of 5G services in the country, next year,” the statement said.

Experts have stated that there is a need for regulatory clarity in the 5G implementation. Earlier on December 8, India’s business tycoon and Reliance owner Mukesh Ambani had also stated that India’s top priority for now should be the rollout of 5G services.
