Mumbai, March 13: A team from the Mumbai Police’s cybercrime division arrived at the home of BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday to take his statement in connection with an alleged case of unlawful phone tapping.
Devendra Fadnavis, the former Maharashtra chief minister, had already received a summons from the Mumbai cyber police, requiring him to appear before them on Sunday. On Saturday, however, the leader said he received a call from a senior police officer informing him that the police team would come to him instead.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Nitin Jadhav and two inspectors made up the police team.
On Sunday, heavy security was stationed outside Fadnavis’ residence in the Malabar Hill neighbourhood of south Mumbai.
Notably last month, Maharashtra home minister Dilip Walse Patil claimed that IPS officer Rashmi Shukla illegally tapped the phones of various political leaders, including state Congress chief Nana Patole, minister Bachchu Kadu, former MLA Ashish Deshmukh, and former MP Sanjay Kakade, when she was the state intelligence chief.
Rashmi Shukla became embroiled in controversy after Devendra Fadnavis referenced a letter supposedly written by her to the then-Director General of Police in Maharashtra concerning alleged corruption in police transfers.
