Ranchi: The indefinite hunger strike by municipal corporation employees, which began on March 5, came to an end on Wednesday, the eighth day of their protest. The employees called off their strike after receiving assurances from the corporation administration that family pensions will be granted from April.
Deputy Administrator Gautam Prasad, Assistant Administrator Chandradeep Kumar, and other officials from the municipal administration reached the protest site and offered sugarcane juice to the striking employees, marking the official end of their hunger strike.
Family Pension Assured from April
The municipal administration has assured that all eligible employees will begin receiving family pensions from April. These pensions will be processed in line with the Jharkhand High Court’s directives, following the precedent set for the first three employees who have already received their pension benefits.
Pension to Follow High Court Guidelines
It is worth noting that the High Court had earlier ruled in favor of three municipal employees, who have already started receiving their family pension. The corporation has confirmed that the same process will now be followed to extend these benefits to other eligible employees as well.
Employees Had Threatened Mass Self-Immolation
The hunger strike had escalated to a critical point when, on Tuesday, protesting employees threatened mass self-immolation if no decisive action was taken regarding their demands. This prompted the municipal administration to step in and negotiate a resolution.
Hope for Economic Relief
Now that the strike has ended, municipal employees are hopeful that their family pensions will start from April, providing much-needed financial relief to their families.
