New Delhi, Dec 30: The 18-month trial of the Nobel laureate was concluded on Friday when a Myanmar junta court convicted exiled civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison for corruption, a legal source told AFP.
Suu Kyi was imprisoned on five counts of corruption stemming from the employment, acquisition, and upkeep of a helicopter that resulted in a ‘loss to the state,’ according to the source.
Suu Kyi (77), a prisoner of the military since the coup in 2021, has been found guilty of all charges brought against her, including corruption, illegal possession of walkie-talkies, and breaking Covid regulations.
Suu Kyi, who has been imprisoned for 33 years as of right now, appeared to be in good health, the insider continued. Suu Kyi’s attorneys are not permitted to speak to the media, and journalists are not permitted to attend the court proceedings. She has only been seen once since the start of her trial, in blurry images from the empty courtroom, and has relied on her attorneys to communicate with the outside world.
Many have given up on her fundamental tenet of non-violence in the decades-long democracy struggle in Myanmar, where ‘People’s Defence Forces’ battle the military on a regular basis throughout the nation.

In its first statement on the situation in Myanmar since the coup, the UN Security Council urged the junta to free Suu Kyi last week. It was a moment of relative unity by the council after permanent members and close junta allies China and Russia abstained, opting not to wield vetoes following amendments to the wording.
