Nagpur (Maharashtra): Maharashtra Police’s Cyber Cell has revealed that one of the accused in the Nagpur riots, Faheem Khan, allegedly edited and circulated videos on social media, glorifying violence and contributing to the spread of unrest in various parts of the city.
According to Cyber Cell Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani, Khan manipulated footage of the protest against Aurangzeb and shared it online, leading to escalated violence.
“He (Faheem Khan) edited and circulated the video of the protest against Aurangzeb, which led to the riots spreading further. He also glorified violent videos,” DCP Matani told ANI.
Multiple FIRs Registered in Nagpur Violence
The Nagpur Police have registered four FIRs related to the riots that erupted on March 17:
• First FIR: Concerns edited videos that glorified violence and instigated riots.
• Second FIR: Focuses on propagating communal tensions through digital content.
• Third FIR: Highlights multiple social media posts inciting further violence.
• Fourth FIR: Covers damage to public property and attacks on law enforcement officials.
Accused Remanded in Custody
Faheem Khan, a leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), was arrested on March 19 following the police FIR. He has been remanded in custody till March 21, with investigations ongoing to uncover more details of the orchestrated digital misinformation campaign.
Curfew Still in Effect, Government to Assess Damages
Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar confirmed that while normalcy has been restored, curfew remains in place in certain areas to prevent further escalation.
“We are in constant touch with the police. The government is assessing the damage caused during the riots and will provide compensation to affected civilians,” Itankar said.
According to preliminary assessments:
• 50-60 two-wheelers, 10-15 four-wheelers, and several cranes were damaged.
• 5-10 houses were vandalized during the violence.
• A special team is conducting property damage assessments for compensation.
50 Arrested, Investigation Continues
Nagpur Police have arrested 50 people, including seven minors, in connection with the riots. CCTV footage analysis and forensic investigations are underway to identify the mastermind and key instigators behind the violence.
Authorities have also taken measures to ensure peace and prevent further communal clashes. Security forces remain on high alert across sensitive areas in the city.
