Islamabad, April 11: The election of Pakistan’s next Prime Minister has commenced in the National Assembly on Monday.
Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is the joint opposition candidate for the top post. With his nomination papers cleared on Sunday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also in the running for Prime Minister.
However, prior of the session, PTI members of the National Assembly, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, resigned in masse, thereby putting an end to Qureshi’s contention.
Notably, Imran Khan, Pakistan’s prime minister, was removed from office through a no-confidence motion after the National Assembly debated the topic for more than 12 hours, and the country’s political situation took a catastrophic turn Saturday night.
