Kyiv, March 9: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he will no longer push for Ukraine’s membership in NATO, a sensitive issue that was one of Russia’s claimed reasons for invading its pro-Western neighbour.
In yet another apparent attempt to appease Moscow, Zelenskyy stated that he is willing to “compromise” on the status of two breakaway pro-Russian areas that President Vladimir Putin acknowledged as autonomous just days before the invasion began on February 24.
“I have cooled down regarding this question a long time ago after we understood that … Nato is not prepared to accept Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said in an interview.
“The alliance is afraid of controversial things, and confrontation with Russia,” he added.
In response to a question about Nato membership, Zelenskyy replied through a translator that he did not want to be president of a “country on its knees begging for something.”
