New Delhi, Feb 8: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed MBBS students seeking an extension of the one-year internship deadline beyond May 31, criteria for applicants for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-PG-22, to make representation to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The MoHFW may decide on the representation within one week of its submission, according to a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath, citing the aspirants’ hardship.

At this time, the bench has stated that it will not offer an opinion on the matter.

The examination has been extended, but there is one critical factor that has to be looked into, according to senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who is representing the MBBS students.

According to him, students taking the exam must complete a one-year required internship by May 31, 2022, in order to be eligible for the NEET-PG-22 examination.

“This May 31, the deadline can be extended by a month or two”, he said.

Because there is no set date for the internship to begin, the bench stated that it would be like jumping into a policy decision.

“Assume that even if the May 31 deadline is extended by a month or two, a group of students will still miss the one-year deadline. The bench stated, “It is more of a policy decision; let the government evaluate your representation.”

The apex court remarked that the NEET-PG-22 exam, which was originally slated for March, has now been postponed.
