Lucknow, Feb 17: In the midst of the hijab debate, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed that Muslim women are forced to wear hijab and that no one wears it voluntarily.
“No woman wears hijab by choice. Did women ever accept triple talaq malpractice by choice? Ask those daughters and sisters,” said Yogi.
“I have seen their tears…when they spoke about their ordeal, their relatives were shedding tears,” Yogi Adityanath said, adding, “One women from Jaunpur thanked PM Modi for abolishing triple talaq,” he added.
Yogi Adityanath also said that the personal clothing is limited to an individual’s choice.
“Can I ask everyone at my office to wear bhagua? Can I say this to everyone in my party? I can’t. Everyone should have freedom and if there’s an institution, there should be a discipline in that institution,” he further added.
Yogi Adityanath’s remarks come amid significant protests in Karnataka against girls and women wearing hijab in schools and universities. The issue erupted a month ago when several Muslim girls were denied entry in the educational institutions in the state. Protests in support and opposition to the hijab have been occurred across the state since then.
The disagreement erupted into a full-fledged war of words, with national political parties waging war on each other over the topic.
