New Delhi, Dec 31: The South Korean military on Saturday reported that North Korea had launched three ballistic missiles in the direction of the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.
The launches were the most recent in a record-breaking string of missile tests carried out by North Korea this year as Pyongyang continues to advance its weaponry amid concerns that it may undertake a seventh nuclear weapon test.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the three short-range ballistic missiles were launched from North Hwanghae Province south of Pyongyang at around 8 am local time.
Notably, The three missiles flew at an altitude of around 100 km and covered a range of around 350 km as Japan’s defence ministry said. The South Korean military added that the missiles flew about 350 km.
“North Korea’s ballistic missile(s) launch is a grave provocation that undermines peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula as well as the international community,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated and condemned it as a clear violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution.
The most recent launches, according to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, did not constitute an immediate threat to American citizens or territory, or to Washington’s allies, but they did show how destabilising North Korea’s nuclear programme is.
The launches took place the day after South Korea’s defence ministry declared that a test flight of a solid-propellant space launch vehicle had been successfully completed.
In the first such breach since 2017, five North Korean drones entered South Korea on Monday. As a result, the South Korean military scrambled fighter jets and attack helicopters to try to shoot them down.
