In the first three rounds, Anand defeated France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Bulgaria’s Vaselin Topalov, and China’s Wang Hao.

Meanwhile, Carlsen won the Classical game against Anish Giri of the Netherlands, gaining three points and joining Anand in the lead.

In round four, Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Wang Hao, while Teimour Radjavov and the seasoned Topalov defeated Vachier-Lagrave and Aryan Tari (Norway) via the Armageddon, respectively.
