New Delhi, May 3: A political brawl erupted after a viral video of Rahul Gandhi, the former Congress chairman, was spotted visiting a nightclub in Kathmandu. While BJP leaders seized the opportunity to attack Rahul Gandhi, the Congress retaliated forcefully, saying “It has still not become a crime in this country to attend a marriage celebration”.
“Rahul Gandhi went to a friendly country, Nepal, to participate in a marriage function of a friend who also happens to be a journalist. It has still not become a crime in this country to attend a marriage. Maybe after today, the BJP may decide (if) it is illegal to attend a marriage and a crime to have friends,” said Randeep Singh Surjewala, the Congress media department head.
The BJP, incidentally, took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi by referring to the Opposition’s “leadership problem.” Prashant Kishor, a poll strategist, had been in talks with Congress about reorganising the organisation.
Kishor, on the other hand, declined to participate in the activity. The Congress’ woes continue, as Hardik Patel, the party’s working president in poll-bound Gujarat, withdrew the name of the organisation from his Twitter profile on Monday. In response to the viral video, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi termed Rahul Gandhi a “full-time tourist and a part-time politician, who is full of hypocrisy.”
Rahul Gandhi arrived in Nepal’s capital city on Monday afternoon, according to the Kathmandu Post. Bhim Udas, a former Nepali ambassador to Myanmar, was quoted in the daily as claiming that he had issued an invitation to Rahul Gandhi to attend his daughter’s wedding.
According to the Nepali publication, Udas’ daughter Sumnima, a former CNN correspondent, is marrying Nima Martin Sherpa. According to a Kathmandu Post article, Rahul Gandhi visited Kathmandu in August 2018 on his route to Kailash Mansarovar. However, the contents of the viral video have not been independently verified.
