Daltonganj, Aug. 5: Interim Vice Chancellor of the Nilamber Pitamber University Daltonganj Dr Tapan Kumar Shandilya has proved a Good Samaritan for an ailing college teacher here who is fighting his abdominal cancer.
The teacher, Dr N K Singh, department of English, has been promoted from lecturer to senior grade lecturer by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) which will enable him to draw a hike in his monthly salary but there was a big hitch in it.
The recommendation for promotion by the JPSC can be implemented only when it is approved by the Syndicate.
But the NPU syndicate meeting was not in early sight and the cancer -ridden teacher was growing disheartened fearing implementation of his promotion to senior grade getting further delayed.
Dr N K Singh told this correspondent late last night that he met the interim VC and narrated his woes and how he is pining for enhancement of pay grade by virtue of his promotion to a senior grade lecturer as recommended by the JPSC.
Singh said Dr Shandilya looked pained and concerned. He knew the Syndicate meeting is not due soon here in this university.
The interim VC said: “I sincerely wanted to bail out this cancer fighting teacher. His case was most genuine. He needed help.”
“There was a big impediment to his way to help this cancer fighting teacher. The recommendation for promotion as given by the JPSC to him was to be approved of by the university at its Meeting of Syndicate and I had no power to convene a special Meeting of Syndicate,” said Dr Shandilya.
The interim VC said, “I wrote to the Raj Bhavan and sought permission to hold a special Meeting of the Syndicate on purely humanitarian ground.”
“I feel privileged when the Governor cum Chancellor got pleased to grant me the permission to convene a meeting of the Syndicate only on this agenda,” said the interim VC, adding “The Meeting of the Syndicate will be solo focused and there will be just this single agenda which is based on pure humanitarian ground and nothing else.
Sources said the way the interim VC has stood through thick and thin with the cancer fighting teacher, is not only rare but worth all appreciation.
Sources said the cancer fighting English teacher Dr Singh will help two more teachers, one of these two dead years ago to get approval for promotion to senior grade by the Syndicate here.
Dr Shandilya said, “I would be holding this Meeting of Syndicate on coming Tuesday for this purpose.”
